The usually keen Danny Yee takes a silly Reason article at face value and claims that there's some critical debate about the value of Ulysses. If by "debate," you mean if it's the most important novel of the 20 C or ever, then this might be accurate, though still silly.
A Dale Peck, who doesn't even live in the same world as serious literary critics, is quoted throwing feces in the article. Why this impresses anyone remains unexplained.
And then they start quoting amazon.com reader-reviews. I've said it once, and I'll say it again: libertarians are culturally impoverished fools. They must resent the fact that they don't get to read Orson Scott Card in their literature classes. And, finally, I should say this: science fiction and fantasy literature, however lovable, is just not as good as what we call serious literature. Gene Wolfe, whom I admire quite a bit and who is easily one of the most literate writers in the genre, has never approached John Updike or even someone like Denis Johnson. It's just a different world, and if you don't recognize this, it's because your education is deficient. Sorry.
